One of the most important elements of a successful parlor magic show is something most people never think about: how the audience is seated.

After more than 40 years of entertaining audiences, I've learned that the way guests are positioned can make an enormous difference in their enjoyment of a performance.

For my Parlor Magic Show, I recommend a unique, four-row, semicircular seating arrangement designed to accommodate approximately 60 guests. This setup creates a miniature theater atmosphere without the need for permanent theater seating or a raised stage.

My Recommended Seating Arrangement for 60 Guests

Rows 1 and 2 — Standard Chairs

The first two rows consist of comfortable, standard-height chairs arranged in a gentle semicircle around the performance area. These seats put guests close to the action and allow everyone to enjoy the smallest details of the magic.

Rows 3 and 4 — Bar-Height Stools

Behind the first two rows, we position two additional rows of bar-height stools, preferably with backs for comfort and support. The elevated seating allows guests in the rear rows to see over those seated in front, providing a much better view of the performance.

This tiered seating concept creates a natural theater-style arrangement without the expense or inconvenience of installing risers. The result is a room where everyone feels like they have a great seat.

A Few Simple Setup Guidelines

• Arrange approximately 60 seats in four curved rows facing the performance area
• Use standard-height chairs for the first two rows
• Use bar-height stools, preferably with backs, for rows three and four
• Stagger seating between rows whenever possible to improve sightlines
• Allow comfortable spacing between rows and provide accessible entry and exit aisles
• Keep the performance area open and free of obstructions
• Avoid placing dining tables between the audience and performer
• For maximum comfort and visibility, seating should be arranged before guests enter the performance area

The exact layout can be adjusted to accommodate the size and shape of your venue. Accessible seating and safe, unobstructed exit routes should always be maintained.

Note: Because bar stools do not create the same height difference as traditional theater risers, sightlines should be checked during setup. Standard-height seating can also be provided for guests who prefer it.
